Scholarships
These scholarships support CSUF students who work in fields related to the mission of Arboretum and Botanic Garden at Cal State Fullerton.
David L. Walkington Memorial Scholarship
Amount: $1,500
This scholarship is funded by the Friends of Fullerton Arboretum. The award was established to honor the memory of the late David L. Walkington, a CSUF professor of biology and a director of Arboretum and Botanic Garden at Cal State Fullerton. The scholarship may be awarded no more than twice to the same individual.
Application is open to full-time upper-division undergraduate or graduate students majoring in biological science or related fields that emphasize botany, ethnobotany, medical plant usage, ornamental horticulture, plant adaptation, genetic engineering of plants and/or biogeography.
Criteria: GPA, community activities, financial need, appropriateness of study

Jorice Maag Local History Scholarship
Amount: $1,500
This scholarship is funded by the Friends of Fullerton Arboretum to encourage the study of California history and may be awarded no more than twice to the same individual.
Application is open to full-time upper-division undergraduate or graduate students pursuing topics related to California history. Preference is given to those interested in local history, defined as topics relating to the immediate area of the campus, Orange County and surrounding areas or persons and institutions in these areas engaging in activities that promote, conserve and/or exhibit such history.
Criteria: GPA, student and community activities, financial need, appropriateness of study/project

Nicholas Torres, David L. Walkington Scholarship recipient (2021)
SCERP scholar Nicholas Torres is studying plant biology at CSUF. He currently works with Dr. Abraham, investigating the effects of soil nitrogen on fennel herbivory. In addition to his research projects, Nicholas is also the national liaison for the CSUF chapter of SACNAS (Society for the Advancement of Chicanos/Hispanics and Native Americans in Science). Previously he worked in Puente Hills, monitoring wildlife and measuring climate change in the rocky intertidal. After graduating, Nicholas plans to become a high school science teacher.

Sharon Chang received a stipend for her research (2020).
"I am currently a part of Dr. Merri Lynn Casem's lab in the department of Biology, and our current project aims to examine the physiological effects of a black widow spider bite. The case study we are focusing on is from Dr. Clark, a physician in Fullerton that treated a fatal case in July of 1900. With the research stipend I received from the Friends of Fullerton Arboretum, my hope is that we strengthen our connection to the history of Fullerton Arboretum and enrich the story of our campus through our project."
Application Procedure
Follow this procedure for either scholarship.
- Complete the Scholarship & Award application, answer all 7 questions and sign the certification.
- Prepare a personal letter of interest that includes a description of your study and/or activities related to the scholarship requirements, a statement of future goals and an explanation of your financial need.
- Provide a copy of all college transcripts.
- Obtain two (2) letters of recommendation, one of which must be from a CSUF faculty member.
- Submit application materials to the Friends of Fullerton Arboretum, 657-278-4010.
